States With the Highest Number of Atheists

Religion may be a thing of the past as a growing number of people are turning to Atheism.

Some states have more Atheists than others, with some results being more shocking than others.

Vermont

According to I Sold My House, Vermont has the highest number of Atheists, as 8% of the population consider themselves to be Atheists.

A significant proportion of the population are Atheists, at 45,322. This is compared to just 22% of the population in Vermont being Catholic.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire has another high amount of Atheists in the state, as according to the Pew Research Center, 6% of adults in New Hampshire are Atheists.

36% of people are not affiliated with any religion (this includes Atheists). However, the biggest religion in New Hampshire is Evangelical Protestantism, at 59%. 

Washington

5% of adults living in Washington consider themselves Atheists, who are part of the 32% in the state who don’t have any particular affiliation to religion.

In comparison, Komo News states that 61% of adults living in Washington would still consider themselves to be Christian.

The same percentage of adults in Massachusetts as Washington consider themselves Atheists, at 5%.

According to the Pew Research Center, this is included within the 32% of adults in Massachusetts who don’t consider themselves to have any particular religion. 

Oregon

Many states in the US have 5% of their adult population who identify as Atheists, and that includes Oregon.

They are included in the 31% who don’t have any religion, as stated by the Pew Research Center, compared to the 61% who identify as Christian.

Connecticut

Connecticut has one of the highest percentages of religious adults out of all the US states, as 70% of its adult population consider themselves to be Christian.

The Pew Research Center states that this is in comparison to the 23% who are unaffiliated with religion, with 5% of these being Atheists.

Nevada

The Pew Research Center states that 28% of adults in Nevada are not affiliated with any religion, 5% of which are Atheists.

This is compared to 66% of the population who consider themselves Christian.

Alaska

Another 5% of the adult population in Alaska are Atheists.

According to the Pew Research Center, they are among the 31% of Alaskan adults who are unaffliliated with any religion.

New York

The overall percentage of adults in New York who are unaffiliated with any religion is 24%, with just 4% of these being Atheists.

According to the Pew Research Center, the highest religion percentage in New York is Christianity, at 59%.

California

Just 27% of the adult population in California are unaffiliated with religion, 4% of which are Atheists.

The Pew Research Center says this is compared to the 63% of Christian adults.

Colorado

The Pew Research Center states that only 4% of Colorado’s adult population are Atheists.

This percentage is included in the 29% of Colorado adults who don’t consider themselves affiliated with any religion.
